Growing Flower Bulbs

Bulb growing guide

If you’ve never grown bulbs before, don’t worry as they are very easy.

Really it’s just a matter of popping them into the ground, a pot, container or window box with the pointy end up.

You can create a multilayered pot or window box in just 4 easy steps:

1. Choose a container with good drainage our traditional wooden planters are ideal. Place some gravel or bits of broken terracotta pots in the base to further aid drainage. Pour in about 3 inches of potting compost.
2. Place the larger bulbs at the bottom of the container about 1 inch apart. Pour in another layer of compost then pop in some narcissi bulbs and cover with a further layer of compost. Then place a third layer of bulbs such as iris and crocus into the container. Bulbs can be packed fairly tightly into a container but try to make sure they don’t touch one another or the container walls.
3. Pour at least 1 inch of compost on top of the final layer of bulbs and protect from frost in a garden shed during very cold weather.
4. Once flowering has finished allow the leaves to die back naturally and feed with a bulb fertiliser. Daffodil and crocus bulbs should continue to flower for several years.

Storing bulbs before planting

If you plan to store your bulbs before planting, make sure they are kept in a cool, dry and airy place. As bulbs are a live product, they will not like being kept somewhere hot such as a greenhouse. This could cause them to rot.

Protecting bulbs over the winter
Bulbs cannot survive being frozen so if a severe winter is forecast make sure you remember to move them somewhere safe or cover them up with a suitable insulating material.
