Growing Guide - Broccoli and Brussels Sprouts

The Brassica family includes broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, kohl rabi, radish, swede and turnip.

Brassicas like a deeply dug soil that has been well firmed. They do not like it too acid.

Make sure plenty of well rotted manure, compost or worm cast has been added to the soil. Plant your seedlings firmly using a dibber to create the required hole for the seedling.

Give seedlings a good watering after planting. Hoe or hand weed around the plants. Try biodegradable mulching paper to suppress weeds.

Brocolli – Purple Sprouting: Plant your Rocket Gardens seedlings in rows approximately 6 inches (15cm) apart approximately 4 inches (10cm) apart in the rows

Calabrese – Space these plants approximately 12 inches (30cm) apart each way. Water well in dry weather. If you pick the main head before the flower bud opens up the side shoots will then develop.

Brussels Sprouts – Space these plants approximately 2 – 2 ½ feet apart (60 -75cm) each way making sure the soil into which they are planted is very well firmed.

Choose a sheltered location. A fertile soil which isn’t too acidic in ideal.

Birds will enjoy having a nibble of your seedlings so try and provide some protection!

Keep weeds at bay and water the young plants if the weather is dry.
