Growing Guide - Rhubarb

Rhubarb is one of the earliest crops that can be harvested in the garden and will grow back year after year.

It prefers a well-drained, fertile soil and likes a sunny position.

Dig over your ground well with a fork and add plenty of manure or organic compost.

Rhubarb crowns can be planted pretty much all year round if available. Plant each crown about 5-10cm deep and 30-50cm apart.

Harvesting:
You can produce earlier fruit by 'forcing' the rhubarb. Simply cover each rhubarb crown (once planted) with an upturned bucket or large terracotta pot and leave in place for approximately 6-8 weeks. Forced rhubarb will turn a deep red colour, which you will be able to enjoy far earlier than the other way of cultivating.

In late Autumn mulch around your rhubarb patch with well rotted manure or compost.

Top tip: This tart fruit goes very well with strawberries to make a delicious jam.
